Aerbio announces the appointment
of Birgitte Skadhauge, Carlsberg Group’s VP of R&D, to the board of directors
September 2, 2024 – Copenhagen
Aerbio, a pioneer in fermentation technology, today announces the appointment of Birgitte Skadhauge to their board of directors. As Vice President of the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, a world-leading R&D biotech and large-scale fermentation Institute, Birgitte brings a multidisciplinary perspective to help guide Aerbio’s scale-up and platform expansion activities from the board.
During her career of three decades at Carlsberg, Birgitte has remained at the cutting edge of fermentation science, successfully bridging basic science, applied research and commercialisation into new innovations and products. During this time she became both a leader within the company and the broader brewing industry, holding many external roles and recognised with adjunct professorships at Århus University (Faculty of Science and Technology) and the University of Copenhagen (Food Science Department). In addition, she has experience as Danish and international board member, member of scientific advisory committees, including Danish Technical University’s Bioengineering advisory board and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.
From her early scientific career, as a master and Ph.D student from University of Copenhagen, Birgitte studied plant genetics and biotechnology, before rising through the Carlsberg organisation overseeing applied research. In the last decade she has been responsible for Carlsberg’s global innovation and R&D activities.
“Birgitte’s deep scientific expertise in fermentation and related commercial production perfectly aligns with Aerbio’s scale-up roadmap” said Lars Topholm, Chairperson of Aerbio. “Her insights will be essential as we continue to both scale our production capability of ultra-sustainable protein, Proton™, and expand our platform to find new ways of creating valuable products from carbon dioxide and hydrogen by harnessing the power of biotechnology”.
Birgitte Skadhauge expressed her enthusiasm about joining the board, stating, “Having had the opportunity to meet the management team, see the pilot plant and really understand the purpose and the scale of Aerbio technology, I look forward to being involved with this breakthrough concept. There is a real need to reduce carbon dioxide and Aerbio’s technology is a unique innovation to fuel fermentation processes using CO2, because the food and biotech industry cannot exclusively rely on sugars as a sole source of carbon and energy. I’m confident that I can help challenge and guide the management team as they scale the technology, drawing on my experience in successfully optimising and innovating at commercial scale fermentation processes. It will be exciting to contribute to Aerbio’s growth and help shape its future as a leader of the next generation of fermentation companies producing ultra-sustainable proteins.”
Aerbio continues to strengthen its governance and strategic oversight with this appointment, reinforcing its dedication to excellence and innovation.
